Funding Landscape
A practical companion to BFS funding-readiness guidance, comparing the major ways research, laboratory, biotech and life-sciences projects may be funded, from infrastructure grants and equipment programs to tax incentives, institutional capital and private financing.
Start with the readiness framework, then use this page for current opportunities, deadlines and links.
How to Use This Matrix
This page compares the major funding routes that may be relevant to research institutions, research hospitals, universities, colleges, biotech companies and life sciences organizations. It is not intended to be an exhaustive database of every grant or financing product.
Where a project involves new equipment, laboratory renovations, utilities, HVAC, emergency power, exhaust, gases, cooling, monitoring or commissioning, early engineering definition can help establish a more credible project scope and capital basis.
Funding Landscape Matrix
This matrix brings grants, contributions, tax incentives, institutional capital and financing options into one view. It focuses on routes that may be relevant to equipment, laboratory infrastructure, facility upgrades, commercialization or R&D projects.

Matrix note: “May support” does not mean a cost is automatically eligible. Program rules, applicant eligibility, internal institutional deadlines, stacking limits and eligible-cost definitions must be confirmed with the funder or appropriate financial / research office. The matrix is intended as a planning tool, not financial or grant-writing advice.
Which Route Fits?
Start with CFI, ORF-RI, NSERC equipment programs, institutional capital and foundation support.
Look at ORF College Fund, NSERC ARTI, institutional capital and partner contributions.
Consider Ontario Genomics, LSSUF, FedDev Ontario, NRC IRAP, SR&ED and private financing.
Consider strategic federal programs, corporate capital, debt financing and tax incentives.
From Opportunity to Infrastructure-Ready Project
BFS does not write grant applications or guarantee funding. We support the engineering side of the project: determining what the space and building systems must provide, identifying infrastructure gaps and turning those findings into a practical scope, cost basis and implementation plan.
Common Questions
Depending on the project and funder requirements, useful technical inputs can include equipment utility requirements, existing-condition information, facility capacity and gap assessments, conceptual layouts, enabling-work scope, preliminary costs, schedule assumptions and technical risk considerations. The institution's research office and funder guidance determine the actual application requirements.
Some infrastructure programs explicitly support renovations or facility work associated with research infrastructure. Eligibility is program-specific, so the proposed work should be mapped to the funder's current eligible-cost rules before it is included in a budget.
BFS can support the engineering and facility-readiness portion of a biotech, laboratory or equipment project, including utility mapping, feasibility, infrastructure gaps, conceptual scope, preliminary cost basis and implementation planning. BFS does not provide financial advice or guarantee funding approval.
Ideally before the budget and project scope are fixed. Early engineering review can identify hidden enabling work such as electrical upgrades, emergency power, cooling, exhaust, specialty gases, structural requirements, monitoring or commissioning that may affect the true project cost.
Funding & Capital Readiness
Share the proposed equipment, research program, space or capital need and BFS can help determine the appropriate engineering-readiness work.
